Got this from a sax friend: practicing - when you play the sax, there are three primary sound sources generated, the reed, the body of the sax and what comes out the horn; the player should become familiar with all three, but when playing in a normal space, the player mostly only perceives the sound of the reed in the mouthpiece, or at least a mix highly biased to that sound source, Playing next to a solid wall then reflects the subtle sounds of the bell and body back to the player so they can hear the sound more like what the audience hears."
